In the second part of our series on protecting yourself against being a crime victim, Get Ahead and Tops Security, a reputed Mumbai-based security services provider, offer suggestions on how women and children can keep safe.

DON'T MISS: Crime: It could happen to you

Crimes against women are on the increase today.

These crimes can happen both within and outside the home.

Dowry deaths make news every day, domestic violence as well as rape have become common crimes.

If you are a victim of such violence:

1. Find a friend or a family member you can trust and let them accompany you to the police station.

2. There are special cells in police stations that are equipped to handle such cases. You will find many counselling groups and NGOs who will help you through this phase.

3. Remember, you do not have to suffer in silence. Nothing you did can justify violence or assault.

Being safe is your fundamental right.

Many women move out of their homes to large metros to make careers for themselves.

Arunisha Sengupta, vice president, corporate communications at Tops Security, Mumbai, has a word of warning.

She says, "Most people believe it can't happen to me. But single women living alone are the most targeted victims of crime.

"Women are more aware that they can be attacked, but don't do anything to avoid such situations."
