Fisherfolk root for Amma

Hevanapattinam, the small fishing hamlet in Cuddalore district, attracted the attention of the Indian press when Hindi film star Vivek Oberoi tried to rebuild the village after it was destroyed by the tsunami.

Today, nearly a year and a half later, there is no sign of any destruction having taken place. You see neatly built houses, comparatively clean surroundings, women washing clothes under water taps, men working on fishing nets and, above all, hundreds of fishing boats neatly in line at the beach.

Yes, Thevanapattinam has changed, and so has the attitude and political affinities of its people. According to the fishermen, the area that was a DMK fort till 2004 has now changed. It is Amma who has built a new fort there.
