His victory is the biggest indicator of the people's disillusionment with politicians.
The former gangster, who claims to have left the path of crime, was elected from the Chinchpokli seat in Mumbai by a margin by 11,818 votes.
He had been nurturing the constituency for some time now.
He had tested the waters by contesting the recent Lok Sabha polls from Mumbai South Central constituency. He lost but polled over 90,000 votes, most of it in the Chinchpokli segment.
The tally did not include his vote because he refused to step out after seeing an 'encounter specialist', Senior Inspector Vijay Salaskar, posted outside his home in Dagdi Chawl, south Mumbai.
In the days to come, he will be in a position to issue orders to Salaskar and other members of the police force.
