Abidi was born in Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh but spent a good part of his life in Delhi. Though bound to a wheelchair since childhood, he completed his higher education, studying journalism, in the US.

His family was deeply worried about his decision to return from the US. Abidi understood why when he began looking for a job in Delhi.

Things were much simpler in the US where there is greater concern for disabled people. Buildings, vehicles, public transport and other facilities are built keeping their needs in mind.

India would not as much as acknowledge their existence.
