Surrounded by hills, Vijayawada lies on the banks of the mighty Krishna river, which flows a mile across near the city but is now at only 10% of its capacity.

The city is referred to as the cultural capital of the state but trade and commerce is what gives it financial clout. It is home to the biggest mango market in the country, from where the king of fruits is sent not only all over the country but also abroad.

The industrial sector is headed by the AP Heavy Engineering Machinery Industry, Jawahar Autonagar, home to several small auto spare part units, and the Railway Wagon Workshop.

Vijayawada's importance is best illustrated by the three power stations in its vicinity. One of them belongs to the government and the other two to the private sector.
