India cling to third placeM J Manohar Rao, Srinivas Bhogle
The Test series loss in Sri Lanka has not hurt India as much as expected because India had lost its previous away series in Sri Lanka too. In fact, India's Test team has seldom done well in Sri Lanka, even when Ajantha Mendis wasn't around.
India (53.97) are holding on to their third place, just as England (54.23) cling on to the second place. Australia (90.49) stay right on top and South Africa (52.78), now fourth, should soon claim the second place.
It must seem puzzling that South Africa have not taken second place in the Rediff Test rankings, even after winning their away series in England. There are primarily two reasons for this.
First, the Rediff rankings are calculated across a wider window of results (typically a window of four years), and South Africa were not as hot two years ago. Second, both India and England have a much better Test record against the leaders Australia (see Table B), and the Rediff Rankings accord higher weights for wins against stronger opponents.
The latest Rediff Test rankings appear in Table A.
