Brian Lara applauds Tendulkar

Indian batting ace Sachin Tendulkar has the best wishes of West Indies legend Brian Lara as he sets out to eclipse his world record of the most number of runs in Test cricket.

"I wish Sachin all the best. Records are meant to be broken. It's a pleasure to be counted in the elite list of players like Sachin and (Sunil) Gavaskar. We should appreciate Sachin for whatever he does," the retired West Indies batsman said.

The 39-year-old left hander amassed 11,953 runs in 131 Tests and 232 innings, while Tendulkar is on the threshold of overhauling the milestone, having tallied 11,877 runs in 150 matches and 244 innings, before the first Test of the four-match series against Australia.

Tendulkar needs 77 more to go past Lara.

Lara, who was on a promotional visit to Mumbai, said Australia captain Ricky Ponting is the only 'guy who can break Sachin's records'.
