Milestones beckon at Nagpur

Mahendra Singh Dhoni -- New Test captain

It came out of the blue after Anil Kumble's unexpected retirement in Delhi, but Mahendra Singh Dhoni was always expecting to get the job.

He has led the team with great distinction in ODIs and won the Twenty20 World Cup in his first major assignment as captain. The wicketkeeper also got a chance to captain the Test team on two occasions and India won both matches.

  • But his first Test as regular captain may not prove to be so easy, after all. The farewell dramas may turn out to be a distraction, while Gautam Gambhir's unavailability may also prove costly.

But, in such a situation, if you had to pick one man to lead your team, it would no doubt be the charismatic M S Dhoni. Not only is he a good man-manager but also has shown the ability to read the game well and react to situations. His wicketkeeping doesn't seem to be affected by the extra burden nor does his batting, which always delivers for India in crunch situations.
