Heavily-armed commandos patrolled the boundary ropes while many kept tight vigil from the stands as the teams took the field for the Test.
England resumed their aborted tour after tight security was provided for the two Tests following safety concerns after the terror attacks in Mumbai.
Some 3,000 police and soldiers have been deployed to guard the players in Chennai.
