A checkered run at the helm

September 14, 2007

Sourav Ganguly's aura had started to diminish, and Greg Chappell made the final kill by damning him in an e-mail to the Board of Control for Cricket in India, which eventually became public property. The BCCI 'in the interest of Indian cricket' sacked Ganguly; Dravid, the diligent vice-captain, was his 'natural successor'.

  • Comparing Dravid and Ganguly

The Bangalore batsman had filled in for Ganguly many a time, most notably during the third Test against Australia in Nagpur and the Multan Test against Pakistan in 2004. But back then, controversy was his biggest companion.

Against Australia, Dravid had to assume captaincy as Ganguly pulled out on the eve of the game due to a mysterious injury, though it was suspected that 'Dada' had dropped out because of a green track. And Multan could have been credited with the biggest rivalries since Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev. India declared the first innings with Sachin Tendulkar unbeaten on 194. Tendulkar came out and said in the press conference that he was disappointed with the decision.

Whether Dravid took the decision or not, he defended it. Whatever transpired in the dressing room, of which Ganguly was a vital part, the big three have since shown enough maturity not to turn the incident into an ugly public squabble.
