Captaincy caps Kumble's glowing resume

November 9, 2007

Hailed as a thinking cricketer, a place in the record books and Indian cricket history is already secure for the bowler who has snapped up wickets relying on subtle variations rather than sharp turn for over 17 years.

He became only the second bowler in Test history to grab all 10 wickets in a Test innings when he emulated England spinner Jim Laker by bowling India to a series-levelling win in the second Test against Pakistan in New Delhi in 1999.

Although he was briefly the Test vice-captain and also led India to victory in a one-dayer against England in 2002, any captaincy ambitions Kumble nursed appeared to remain unfulfilled just like his Australian counterpart Shane Warne.
