Sangakkara, whose magnificent century paved the way for a five-run victory in the previous match, played a sharp delivery from Zaheer on to his stumps.
Earlier, the left-arm paceman dismissed Sri Lanka openers Sanath Jayasuriya and Upul Tharanga in the space of four deliveries in his second over.
Jayasuriya mis-timed a pull and was caught by Sourav Ganguly at square-leg, while Tharanga fell lbw to a delivery that jagged back into the left-hander.
