The absence of Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who is suffering from a bout of food poisoning, prompted the West Indies to send Wavell Hinds up the order and launch the innings with his earlier regular partner Chris Gayle, in the in the Group A match of the ICC Champions Trophy, against Australia, at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai, on Wednesday.
But Hinds failed to deliver. He hung out his bat out to gangling Australian left arm pace bowler Nathan Bracken, who opened the bowling with Brett Lee, and was caught by skipper Ricky Ponting at second slip in the fourth over to make it 10 for one.
Runako Morton and Brian Lara scored brilliant half-centuries to rally the West Indies to a competitive 234 for 6.
Australia could only score 224 for 9 in th eir 50 overs and lost by 10 runs.
Left: Bracken appeals for a favourable decision.
