Skipper Stephen Fleming stood tall among the ruins to anchor New Zealand with a fine knock of 89 in the ICC Champions Trophy Group B league opener at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai on Monday.
The left-hander was the lone Kiwi batsman to come to terms with the vagaries of a slow pitch that offered low bounce and turn as New Zealand, after being inserted, were bowled out for 195 in 45.4 overs.
Fleming's 112-ball essay was studded with 11 boundaries.
The Kiwis turned tables on South Africa by skittling them for a paltry 108 in 34.1 overs, to record a comprehensive 87-run victory.
