Matthew Hoggard (left), who had taken the crucial wickets of Australia captain Ricky Ponting and Michael Clarke, failed to impress on the third day.
He took over from Andrew Flintoff at the Nursery End and was in turn replaced following four ineffectual overs by Simon Jones (right) after England had taken the new ball.
The England bowlers were finding it difficult to polish off the the tail. The England fielders also did not support the bowlers as they spilled a couple of easy chances.
