The Best of Waugh

102 v England, 5th Test at Sydney, 2003

An innings that instantly entered the Waugh mythology.

It captivated the cricket world. With Waugh's career believed to be at stake, the century was significant for its 'last chance' character and the emotion surrounding it rather than its effect on the contest, which Australia lost, after having wrapped up the series 4-0.

Under fire from sections of the media all season, Waugh's future beyond this match was uncertain. He ensured that he would go out on his terms by reaching his hundred off the last ball of Day 2 before a sellout home crowd.

Coming in at 56 for 3, it was a trademark Waugh innings, full of positive intent. It cemented his reputation as a people's cricketer.
