If Waugh's dream of a series victory in India failed to materialise, it was not for want of trying on his, and his team's, part. His first and only century in India, which seemed pre-destined after Australia stumbled to 269/8, appeared part of a higher script: a hundred in a city with special meaning to Waugh, at one of the world's great cricket venues, to lead his team to a cherished series win.
It was not to be. The follow-on was enforced, and the rest is history.
It was a special innings nonetheless for its personal meaning in an unforgettable contest.
