Simon Katich adopted a positive attitude in his batting and it paid off. He guided Australia to within 32 runs of the follow-on target of 506, and as long as he was at the crease, ably supported by Jason Gillespie, it looked as if the Aussies would avert the ignominy of the follow-on. In the event, Sourav Ganguly decided to give his bowlers a rest and set a challenging fourth innings target instead.
